The hike starts at the parking lot in Bruggerenwald above Urnäsch and is also posted as an official snowshoe tour from here. The trail first leads through the forest, then over the ridge and along the ridge to Hochalp: from here you have a great view of the snow-covered Appenzellerland and the Säntis massif. The mountain inn is not regularly open in winter. On the other side of the cauldron, the trail descends again in open terrain.
The hike is 5km long and has 360m altitude difference, so it's quite doable, even if the ascent is a bit strenuous. The great views definitely make it worth it though.
The route is in a wildlife rest area, so leashes are required.
