From the Melchsee-Frutt mountain station, the hiking trail leads in the direction of Distelboden. After leaving Frutt-Dörfli, first a platform 40 meters above the frozen Melchsee offers an impressive view of the Obwald mountain panorama. On the east side, the panoramic view is flanked by the Titlis and extends over the Wendenstöcke to the Balmeregghorn and on the west side to the Brünighaupt.
The path continues along the frozen reservoir and branches off to the left at the end. It crosses under the Distelboden-Bonistock aerial tramway and leads parallel to the rocks to the Tannendamm. A fantastic mountain panorama accompanies the hikers further on the leisurely path. The next section leads along the frozen Tannensee and then gently downhill to Tannalp, which lies in a sheltered hollow. And although the name suggests it: There is not a single fir tree to be seen here, as we are at over 1900 meters. The name probably comes from the Middle Ages, when there were still conifers here. At that time, the Alps were expanded at the expense of the forest.
At the Tannalp mountain inn is the turning point of the tour. The chapel next to it is often seen as a calendar subject. The way back follows the southern shore of the Tannensee. Just like Melchsee, it is popular with ice fishermen. With a bit of luck, you'll catch the right moment and can observe them at their hobby. Via Distelboden, where several cable cars start, you hike past the pretty Melchsee Chapel, which stands on a small peninsula. Afterwards, you return to Melchsee-Frutt on the same path.
