Vanessa and Reto with Emma (from 11.05.18):

Today, according to the stage description, 24 km, 1050 meters of ascent and 1200 meters of descent lie ahead of us. This corresponds to a hiking time of about 7:40 h. Therefore we want to start early, but we can only have breakfast at 8:00 am. Afterwards we leave immediately and start with a first ascent. Immediately we find ourselves in the wonderful, hilly landscape of the Appenzell. The hiking trail is incredibly beautiful, but it rarely passes through villages and therefore hardly passes any wells. You should definitely carry enough water on you. But you will find a conspicuously large number of Robidogs. The paths lead us over many meadows, now and then also through cowsheds with mother cows and bulls. But these do not cause us any trouble. In the distance you can see the village Schwellbrunn after about two hours of walking. Here Switzerland presents itself as if from a picture book catalogue. On the way there are catering facilities, such as the Sitz mountain restaurant or restaurants or the village shop in St. Peterzell. In St. Peterzell we have already covered 16 kilometres and now we are going to make a last ascent to almost 1000 metres altitude difference. Shortly before Wattwil near Tüetlisberg or in Hofstatt you can leave the hiking trail and walk along the road down to the village. This is recommended for all those whose dogs cannot/do not want to walk up the stairs. Because the last meters along the rock face you have to walk down exactly on such a staircase. Our conclusion of today: absolute dream stage, but conditionally for dog and dog leader demanding. Since you run almost exclusively in the sun and there are hardly any water points, we would advise against this stage in the middle of summer. We stay overnight at a very reasonable price in the functional accommodation Motelina directly on the Way of St. James, where we do not pay any extra for the dog and unfortunately do not offer breakfast. We could complete the stage in about 7:20 minus lunchtime, but including drinking and dog bathing times. The distance corresponded approximately to our measurement, the altitude meters were again about 200 m less.
